Abstract

Within the scope of the development work carried out for NET/ITER, two 40 kA prototype conductors based on the cable-in-conduit forced flow concept have been manufactured: one conductor with 108 NbTi strands to operate at a nominal temperature of 1.8 K and one conductor with 864 Nb(3)Sn strands to operate at a nominal temperature of 4.5 K. The design and manufacture of these two conductors are described. Particular points related to the heat treatment of the Nb(3)Sn are detailed. Special samples have been prepared to study more specifically the mechanical, hydraulic and geometrical characteristics of the conductors. General results concerning the testing of these conductors in several high field facilities are presented.
