Advances in the automatic processing of satellite imagery
This paper reviews advanced research topics underway in the Environmental Mapping and Modelling Group at the Joint Research Centre in the area of image processing. Three main areas of current work are discussed. These are: (i) development of neural networks for automatic classification of remotely-sensed imagery; (ii) use of expert systems in image classification; (iii) image partitioning based on enhanced segmentation methods. The methodologies behind each technique are presented.
