Negative-energy waves in an inhomogeneous force-free Vlasov plasma with sheared magnetic field
The conditions for the existence of negative-energy electrostatic waves are investigated for the case of an inhomogeneous force-free Vlasov-Maxwell equilibrium with sheared magnetic field. The investigation concentrates on evaluating the general expression for the second-order wave energy derived by Morrison and Pfirsch in the form given by Correa-Restrepo and Pfirsch. The paper reinforces their earlier theory in the context of drift-kinetic theory. It also demonstrates that in conditions of negative-energy modes large perpendicular wave numbers are not necessary within the system, a feature which enhances the relevance of these modes.
