Abstract

Modular stellarator reactors of the advanced stellarator type may offer desirable reactor properties when compared to tokamak reactors. Such properties have been studied through the Wendelstein 7-X experiment as part of an integrated concept test. The stellarator confines toroidal plasmas with magnetic fields generated by currents exclusively outside the plasma region. The Wendelstein 7-X experiment utilises the HELLIAS (Helical Advanced Stellarator) concept which represents a modification of reactors used in previous Wendelstein 7-X experiments. The paper identifies several decisive advantages of the stellarator reactor.
