Scanning microscopy techniques are used not only for research work in material and life science but also for routine applications in almost all vital sectors of everyday life. In particular, they have the potential for major impact in information technology. This collection of invited papers, based on the IMO Symposium Fall '90, describe new developments in the techniques of scanning microscopy and current applications, including results of recent ESPRIT basic research actions. They provide a complete overview of the state of the art and perspectives for future developments in the field.
