Research and development in the production and use of biomass, for energy and industrial raw materials, has been supported by the European Commission since the 1970s. Recent work has looked at the use of biomass in electricity production. In fact, the prospect of large-scale, environmentally friendly electricity production from biomass is becoming both technically and economically more feasible. The papers included in this volume cover issues concerned with: (i) sources of suitable biomass and wastes; (ii) production; (iii) harvesting; (iv) recovery and conversion into fuels; (v) advanced technologies for electricity production; (vi) the economics of the process and progresses; (vii) environmental aspects. The state of the art of technological progress and future targets are also presented.
