Unification of optics and electricity in a coherent electromagnetic theory and the discovery of the photoelectric effect boosted the emergence of a novel science termed optoelectronics, together with a totally new field of application possibilities. New materials, devices, specific equipment and general systems are being developed both in purely electrical and optoeletronic fields. BRITE/EURAM workshops are organised with the aim of fostering exchange of technical and scientific information to allow for informal contacts between the participants in view of possible future collaborations. At one such workshop on electrical and optical materials, held in Louvain-la Neuve in 1991, seven BRITE/EURAM projects, together with one EUREKA project and six from the Feasibility Award Scheme, were presented and are discussed in this report. These can be divided into two groups; (i) energy (power generation and transformation) related projects; (ii)information related projects.
