BRIDGE (Biotechnology Research for Innovation, Development and Growth in Europe; 1990-1993) represents the latest phase in research and development programmes aimed at biotechnology. The programme has a budget of 100 million ECU and covers the following research areas: (i) information infrastructure; (ii) enabling technologies; (iii) cellular biology; (iv) pre-formative research. Corresponding research projects are conducted through N-projects and T-projects. N (Network) projects are devoted to the removal of specific gaps in knowledge and know-how while T (Targeted) projects concentrate on past projects that are subject to structural/scale constraints. Currently 579 laboratories are cooperating in BRIDGE. This first BRIDGE report covers the period 1991 - March 1992 and gives, for each project, the results achieved in the different laboratories.
