Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Biotechnology provides additional means for genetic resources assessment, conservation and use. With the adoption of the Framework Programme of Community activities in the field of Research and Technological Development (1990-1994), the Council has decided to introduce conservation of genetic resources as one of the priority areas of the next Community biotechnology research programme. Under this heading, there will be shared-cost Community projects alongside activities which involve cooperation with relevant national programmes and competent international organisations. This paper reports on the results of discussions between experts from science, breeding and industry. Specific working groups discussed requirements for plant, animal and microbial germplasm assessment, conservation and utilisation, and future research needs and priorities.
