Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The subject of the conservation of genetic resources has been considered in the proposal for the Biotechnology research programme under the third Framework programme for Community research and development. Research in this field is based on four key areas: (i) rapid molecular genetic screening methods; (ii) plant taxonomy information systems; (iii) strategies for animal germplasm conservation; (iv) exploration of hidden microbial communities. This paper reports on an exploratory meeting, held at Innsbruck, Austria in 1991, which covered these areas. European centres of excellence and research skills in these areas are identified, as are the priorities with regard to future funding.
