The FOREST programme (FOrestry sectorial RESearch and Technology) covers the whole spectrum of activities within the forestry and forest industrial sectors. Its objectives are to increase the availability of forest resources, to provide better quality raw materials in keeping with economic and environmental requirements, to improve the international competitiveness of EC forest industries (in particular small and medium sized enterprises) and to facilitate the rational use of forest products in the EC. This publication acts as a synopsis of research and development projects. The three main areas covered are: (i) forest resources (tree improvement, planning and management and protection); (ii) wood technology (quality assessment and processing technology); (iii) pulp and paper manufacturing (improvements in pulping and bleaching and in paper manufacture and coating).
