The ESPRIT Advisory Board has asked its subgroup on Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Engineering (CIME) to consider what should be done to enhance the competitive position of European manufacturing and engineering industries. The issue now is how best to capitalise on the successes of the CIM programme and its wealth of experience. This discussion paper analyses the nature of manufacturing and engineering, the global aspects of such industries within the EC, and the possible strategy and objectives. It recommends four lines of action: (i) moon-shot projects with challenging targets; (ii) projects aimed at areas critical for the achievement of manufacturing and engineering excellence; (iii) actions oriented by the needs of SMEs; (iv) technology transfer, education and training.
