Abstract

The currently developing concept of intelligent cities, i.e. geographically limited areas supplied with a high concentration of telematic and informatic services and facilities, is one of the building blocks contributing to the pan-European advanced communications environment which is the ultimate goal of Community action in the telecommunications field. Also, the involvement of local authorities in initiating and managing such intelligent city projects has introduced a significant new group of participants to the telecommunications environment. This publication presents the results of a workshop attended by more than 70 delegates from the European Community. The papers review a number of topics, notably the current developments toward the intelligent city, the relationship of this concept with the RACE programme, and the identification that may impede such progress. The workshop succeeded in presenting first hand accounts, as well as technical details, of all the major actions currently on-going in Europe in this field.
