Abstract

Nuclear fusion holds the promise of becoming a virtually inexhaustible, environmentally acceptable and economically viable energy source. The book reviews the development of this technology, through Euratom and the JET programme. The case for fusion is presented following which the present status of fusion around the world is reviewed. Strategies for future research are proposed with the recommendation that an experimental reactor (Next Step) and demonstration reactor (DEMO) should be the priority goal of future research and development by the European and world community.
