The objective of THEME is to analyse the future configurations of the European system of research and technological development in the context of wider continental Europe and the future implications for social and economic cohesion in the Community. The purpose of this study is to provide insight into the conditions for regional development in Hungary and Poland. The focus is on technological change and in this context special attention is paid to the role of international cooperation in the field of science and technology. Two case studies of regions - Csongrád (Hungary) and Poznan (Poland) - provide elements for an innovation policy at the regional level. Recommendations for the European Communities with regard to assistance of Central European countries in the field of science and technology are also given.
