Statistical science and the practices of official statistics have evolved greatly in recent years under the impact of new technologies. New statistical techniques continue to be developed, which lean on computers, GIS technology, knowledge based systems and new telecommunication facilities. This publication contains the proceedings of a conference held in Bonn in 1992, concerning such technologies and techniques. The aims of the conference were to explore the possibilities offered by these new tools, their impact on statistical theory, on the construction of information systems, on data collection procedures, on the processing of information and on the quality of the data. The areas where important progress can be expected in the years to come, and where developments should be encouraged, were identified.
