Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The report looks at five of the sixteen participants in the special SPRINT subprogramme initiated in 1986 to deal with typical sectors of traditional European industry deemed most in need of modernisation. The industries concerned are wood, footwear, building, paint and composite materials. These disparate industries have clear similarities between the joint projects that the various networks are carrying out, mainly in that all have a system for structured exchange of information in priority areas; all make the special skills of each member available to the others; and all have systems to access the common pool of know-how developed. One of the main aims is quality enhancement. Main lessons learnt are that research associations in different countries can work together, that the advanced sectors have received excessive attention to the detriment of traditional industries and that it is possible to reconcile tradition and innovation.
