Safety Technology Institute - Annual report 1991
The first part of the report briefly outlines the content and the main results of research work performed in 1991 by the Safety Technology Institute in the specific programmes on reactor safety, waste, safeguards, fusion, industrial hazards and reference methods for evaluation of structural reliability. In the area of reactor safety the research was mainly devoted to the study of severe accident phenomena with the FARO programme and the participation in the PHEBUS-FP in-pile tests. Research on other aspects of nuclear energy is developed around the new laboratories of the nuclear island, PETRA and PERLA for waste and safeguards and ETHEL for fusion. The programme on industrial hazards focused on experimental and theoretical studies and related to runaway reactions, accidental release of products from industrial plants and their deflagration/detonation. Concerning the area of reference methods for the evaluation of structure reliability the construction of the Reaction Wall facility was completed. The second part of the report illustrates the activities performed by the Institute in support of the Commission policies and gives information on other initiatives of the Institute.
