Improved congener specific analysis of chlorobiphenyls on a 50 m CP-SIL-8 narrow-bore column coupled in series with a 25 m HT-5 columnFunded under: JRC-ENVPROT 5C
The congener specific analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) by high resolution gas chromatography on a 50 m x 0.25 mm fused silica capillary column with a 0.26 micron film of 5 % diphenyl dimethyl polysiloxane (CP-SIL-8) was improved significantly by series coupling it with a 25 m x 0.2 mm fused silica capillary column with a 0.10 micron 1.2-dicarba-closo-dodecarborane dimethyl siloxane (HT-5). A total of 64 congeners in technical PCB mixtures could be analysed as resolved peaks by ECD (86 by MS) with the SIL-8 column and 84 by ECD (108 by MS) with the SIL-8/HT-5 combination column. The high upper limit for these stationary phases (above 300 C) allowed for fast temperature programming and short analysis time (60 min.).
