Abstract

The quasilinear theory of electron cyclotron heating by right hand polarised extraordinary waves propagating nearly parallel to an inhomogeneous magnetic field is discussed. In contrast with most of the applications of quasilinear theory, arbitrary values of the wave damping are considered since this is in general the case in resonance absorption of the R-X wave. The related problem of enhanced emission and/or transmission of radiation normal to the magnetic field near the second harmonic for purposes of plasma diagnostics is also discussed. The physical situations considered here are typical of ECRH for plasma formation for material processing.
