Abstract

An International Standard is in preparation giving methods for the calibration and verification of sound intensity instruments. This report describes measurements made at NPL, as part of a collaborative project partly funded by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR), to develop some of those methods. Sound intensity probes were calibrated in free-field conditions using three different signal types, and the low-frequency pressure-residual intensity index of the probes was measured in three different acoustic environments. Conclusions are drawn about the most appropriate means of implementing the draft Standard using facilities such as those developed at NPL, and also about the conditions under which alternative means might be more appropriate.
