The paper presents results of investigations into combustion characteristics in diesel engines. A two-dimensional light sheet, irradiated into the piston bowl of a 4-cylinder Volkswagen 1.9 l diesel engine with optical access, resulted in Mie scattering generated by diesel droplets both inside and outside the light sheet. A new evaluation procedure was developed allowing information on spray penetration in the direction of the piston axis. Quantitative results were obtained on the jet tip penetration and on the spray cone angles of the jets. An appearance frequency distribution of the liquid fuel was calculated, from which jet penetration was reconstructed and results obtained from computer codes were validated.
