Abstract

To assist in the development of detection methods for foodstuffs and food ingredients treated by gamma and beta irradiation, a concerted research action was set up. Four areas of research were identified: (i) DNA based methods; (ii) microbiological and biological methods; (iii) physical methods; (iv) chemical methods. In September 1991 a workshop was held in Portonovo di Ancona to update the results of R&D for these four methods and also present the results of an electron spin resonance (ESR) intercomparison. The full texts of 40 scientific communications presented at the Ancona workshop are compiled in these proceedings.
