Abstract

The aim of the project described in this report was to prove the potential of primary measures in achieving maximum NO(x) reduction at minimum investment and operating costs. A system incorporating low-NO(x) coal/gas burners combined with two stage combustion was demonstrated in an old pulverised coal/natural gas fired 180 MWe utility boiler at the Maas power station. This opposed fired, dry bottom boiler (580 t/h of steam) was retrofitted with 16 newly developed low-NO(x) burners of the High Temperature NO(x) Reduction (HTNR) type, and 8 after-air ports (AAPs). The system's implementation is described and the details and results of its operation are also presented.
