Abstract

The paper is a response to a proposal to deploy a dedicated helium beam injector based on a standard JET PINI source, and deals with the optimal physical characteristics of a helium atom beam required for neutral particle analyser (NPA) and charge-exchange resonance spectroscopy (CXRS) applications on JET, and with the correspondence between these requirements and a standard JET PINI atom beam source. NPA and CXRS requirements are estimated, and the scope of applicability of the two measurements is discussed. The reference application is for measurement of density and slowing-down energy spectrum of alpha-particles during full-power D-T operation in JET. Factors governing the helium atom density in the plasma from a PINI source are discussed, and the atom density is tabulated for different beams.
