This book contains the papers presented at a workshop on Marginal Land : Value and utilization in different agro-climatological zones. The meeting was a series of symposia dealing with land evaluation and assessment problems. Current land evaluation methods generally qualify the land use potential on the basis of actual or potential productivity. Suitable or marginal lands are therefore often correlated with areas of high or low productivity. The direct goal of this workshop was to focus the attention on the role of crop quality factors in land evaluation. The long-term objective of this first workshop was to agree on a better and more accurate definition of crop and product quality and to identify the relative impact of factors that affect such quality. In this context the definition of marginal land might well be modified, and areas which were formerly classified as unsuitable or marginal could perhaps generate better perspectives.
