Genetic improvement of two species of Mediterranean nuts : The almond and the pistachioFunded under: FP1-AGRIRES 3C
For their eighth meeting at Nimes, breeders from several Mediterranean countries presented fifty papers about the breeding of the almond and pistachio species. Ten papers were devoted to the self compatibility of the almond species. Seventeen of the communications were concerned with physiological characteristics, in particular the behaviour of almond varieties under difficult climatic conditions. The improvement of rootstocks and soil adaptation factors are the subject of the third set of papers. Thirteen of the papers concerned the pistachio culture. This nut tree is practically new in countries such as Spain where the natural and climatic conditions provide it with an excellent environment.
