  • Agrimed research programme : Fodder trees and shrubs in the Mediterranean production systems : Objectives and expected results of the EC research contract

Abstract

Mediterranean livestock production systems are extensive, diversified, fragile and have feed gaps. Fodder trees and shrubs can play a vital role in upgrading and improving these systems because they can grow in dry and marginal areas and provide abundant and protein-rich feed to ruminants during the critical periods of the year, especially in the summer. Cultivated species are superior to spontaneously grown because they can be selected and planted to meet specific needs of the production systems. They present, however, several problems such as great variability in growth rate and digestibility, high cost in establishment and difficulties in grazing management.
