Decontamination of solid waste contaminated with alpha emitters and recovery of plutonium : ELISE and PROLIXE facilities
The work carried out at the Radiochemistry Building of the Fontenay-aux-Roses Nuclear Research Centre is mainly research into fuel reprocessing and the production of transuranium isotopes. Work done in glove boxes and hot cells generates waste contaminated with alpha emitters (glove box experiments) and alpha/beta/gamma emitters (hot cell experiments). To improve management of this waste it was decided to install two pilot facilities for solid waste decontamination: ELISE, a group of three glove boxes for treatment of alpha-active solid waste, and PROLIXE, a hot cell for treatment of alpha/beta/gamma-active solid waste. In these facilities, leaching processes were developed for decontamination of the waste and recovery of actinides.
