Development and evaluation of an X-ray radioscopy device for analysis of drilling cores
The aim of this project is to design and construct an X-ray radioscopy mobile unit, adapted to the study of cored geological materials. A prestudy based on the X-ray absorption theory by the material has made it possible to dimension the apparatus and especially the X-ray tube power. The schematic diagram of the device is presented and the principle on which it works is described. After consideration of the quality of the radiography images, an important part of the work has been devoted to the development and adaptation of the digitised image processing software. The images are improved with better contrast, and haze and noise reduction. The main functions of the MIPS and XCORE software are described. Finally, this technique has been applied to a wide range of geological materials: clay, salt, granite, shale.
