Abstract

In order to prove the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HAW) in salt, a five years test disposal of thirty highly radioactive canisters has been planned in the Asse salt mine in the Federal Republic of Germany. The thirty canisters containing the radionuclides caesium 137 and strontium 90 in quantities sufficient to cover the bandwidth of heat generation and gamma radiation of real HAW will be emplaced in six boreholes located in two galleries at the 800 m level. This report describes the progress and status of the HAW project obtained in the period May 1990 to December 1991.
