Innovation in agro-biotechnology (SAST project no. 4) : Case study on plant breeding technologyFunded under: FP2-MONITOR, FP2-SAST
This report presents one of six parallel case studies carried out as part of the project on innovation in agro-biotechnology. In this case, the purpose of the study was to demonstrate areas in plant breeding where biotechnology can resolve commercially orientated problems/goals and analyse the principal constraints to maximum exploitation. The need for rapid action is stressed in this report and the key recommendations identified include: i) a radical change in the EC's research funding model for agro-biotechnology, to catalyse exploitation, increased competitiveness and achievement. Three project areas are proposed: tools and techniques, science/industry interface, EC supra-interest projects; ii) IRDAC to review the improvement of communication between breeders and food processors; iii) the increased complementarity of research programmes and resources between institutes; iv) the use of existing training programmes to foster science/industry communication; v) the EC to undertake a major programme of awareness and education to enable the public to make more informed, rational judgements on biotech-based products.
