The characterisation of three certified rapeseed reference materials and their utilisation in the indirect determination of total glucosinolates in rapeseed by X-RF
Rapeseed is a rich source of edible oil (around 40 % content), and the residual meal, after removal of the oil, is widely used as a feed for farm animals and poultry. However the presence of glucosinolates (GSLs) in the rapeseed meal can have adverse effects on some animals, and within the EEC there exists a strong move to encourage the production of rapeseed crops with low glucosinolate content. The characteristics of three rapeseed reference materials, certified for their total glucosinolate and sulphur contents, are described. The application of the reference materials in the indirect quantification of the total glucosinolate content of rapeseed samples is reported.
