Abstract

The significant progress that has been made in recent years in the understanding of the interaction between ICRF waves and the plasma boundary, and in particular the identification of RF sheath formation as the main underlying universal physical mechanism for RF-induced impurity generation and edge effects, led to the reevaluation of the role of the Faraday screen (FS). Recently successful ICRH operation using a carefully designed antenna without FS has been demonstrated and the performances of an ICRH antenna with and without FS have been compared. These results are explained on the basis of RF sheath theory and by the almost perfect shielding of parallel electric fields by the plasma.
