Extensions of B2 for the simulation of ASDEX-Upgrade scrape-off layer plasmas
In order to understand the basic physics of the plasma edge/divertor region of ASDEX-Upgrade, the two-dimensional multi-species fluid code B2 is used to calculate single null scrape-off layer deuterium plasma characteristics, at present mostly with helium ions as impurity. For a kinetic description of neutral atoms and molecules, the three-dimensional linear Monte-Carlo code EIRENE takes the plasma profiles of B2 as background and calculates the source terms in the fluid equations due to neutral-plasma interactions. This coupling allows a self-consistent modelling of mutual effects of neutral and charged particles in a scrape-off layer plasma. Comparing the results of the coupled code system with the stand-alone B2 code it is obvious that the simple B2 recycling model is not suitable for detailed analysis of, for example, flow patterns and helium pumping. These quantities need a more realistic recycling model as given by EIRENE.
