Abstract

This report presents a general view of particle transport in toroidal, magnetically confined plasmas (in stellarators as well as tokamaks). Whilst some experimental findings can be explained on the basis of collision theory, there are others on which the theory sheds no light at all; but in either case an understanding of the physics of the theory is essential for any meaningful evaluation of results. As well as covering all the most important aspects of collision theory, the report describes and discusses experimental observations, and outlines the theory of turbulence with which to explain anomalous transport. It concludes with a discussion of principal issues and experimental findings relating to the accumulation of impurities and the transport of electrons.
