Abstract

The European collaborative programme COST (COoperation in the field of Science and Technology) has been active in materials for power engineering applications since 1972 when COST Project 50 on materials for gas turbines was initiated. With the continued demand for improvements in materials and greater efficiency in the design of components for power plant and propulsion applications, the work of COST has expanded and the current programme, COST 501, involves about 500 man-years of effort and a total cost over three years of approximately 40 MECU. In this paper the general structure and organisation of the COST programme is outlined and some of the current activities in power engineering materials are described.
