Abstract

The objective of this research was to produce a processing chain allowing the transition from a pixel-based image classification to a landscape product partitioned in a way which is compatible with normal cartographic needs, and similar to the products of methods based on human photo-interpretation. To do this a processing chain is being developed which will involve the integration of existing methods for image filtering and new ones based on correcting land cover class area statistics with the aim of producing high quality cartographic generalisation. The ultimate aim is to convert products from sensors such as the Landsat Thematic Mapper into a form suitable for their use in updating digital land cover maps such as those produced by the Corine land cover project of the European Community.
