This report presents one of six parallel case studies carried out as part of the project on innovation in agro-biotechnology. In this case, the potential role of biotechnology in the non-food uses of European agricultural production was examined. The general development of non-food uses (NFU), together with the development of biotechnologies within the NFU sector, is described, and the evolution of the European regulatory framework (CAP and environmental regulations) is investigated. The four industrial case studies presented in this report are: (i) the oleochemical industry; (ii) the paper industry; (iii) the sugar and starch industries; (iv) the chemical fermentation industry. These have enabled the characterisation of the impacts of biotechnology in terms of decrease of production cost and the addition of new functions relating to the supply control, the improvement of processes and the development of products.
