Development and validation of a computational model for spray-gas mixing in spray dryers
Spray drying is an important industrial drying process used to convert a liquid feedstock to a solid product in a single step. The best operating procedures are usually obtained by empirical laboratory and pilot plant experiments. The main objective of this programme was the development and validation of a computer code to model spray dryers. A successful code would reduce some of the empiricism involved in the technology, and consequently help to reduce the risks involved in introducing more radical changes to operating procedures. The main features of the model, and of special instruments used to make validating measurements, are described. Comparisons of model predictions and measurements for wide ranges of dryers and feedstocks are also reported.
