Sorbent handling on industrial sites for SO(2) control
Concern over the impact of atmospheric emissions of sulphur dioxide on the environment has led to increasingly stringent legislation to control emission levels. This report describes the results of studies to investigate problem areas associated with in-furnace injection of calcium-based sorbent for sulphur control and the development and demonstration of suitable material handling systems. Two different applications have been considered: (i) sorbent addition as bed material in a fluidised bed boiler; (ii) the injection of sorbent as a fine powder into the furnace of a travelling grate stoker fired boiler. In addition to assessment of the performance and problems of each of the technologies, sorbent handling systems suitable for each application are described. Methods of handling and of possible utilisation of the solid residues generated are also considered.
