The application of ultrasonic techniques for the non destructive evaluation of the grain size and the anisotropy of metal sheets between 0.6 and 2 mm thick

The in-process evaluation of texture and grain size using a non-destructive method has considerably improved process control during the manufacture of sheet iron and the monitoring of product quality. This type of method can be used to control product homogeneity and any changes which occur in product characteristics in the course of time. As a result, rapid action can be taken when needed. To evaluate grain size, a laboratory instrument based on the bottom echo attenuation measuring method was developed. This method has been tested in the laboratory on industrial samples for measurements in terms of both the longitudinal and transverse waves. The precisions obtained are +/- 1 ASTM for the longitudinal waves and +/- 0.5 ASTM for the transverse waves.
