The price of natural gas is related to the energy content, which has to be measured by both the supplier and the buyer. Two aspects of energy transfer however which may introduce uncertainties in this area are the measurement of the transferred quantities of gas and the determination of the calorific value of the gas. The purpose of the work described in this report was to evaluate to what extent the determination of the calorific value would reduce the overall uncertainty in energy transfer. Fourteen European laboratories determined the gross calorific value of two gas compositions using the following approaches: (i) direct measurement (calorimetry); (ii) determination of the gas composition (by gas chromatography) and calculation of the GCV according to ISO 6976. The measurement methods used are described and the results and conclusions from the research project are presented.
