Abstract

1988 saw the start of the replacement of batch type sterilisation systems by continuous sterilisation systems at the TVA rendering plant in St. Erasmus, in the Federal Republic of Germany. The system was commissioned in 1989 and its operation is considered fully satisfactory by the customer. The anticipated energy saving was not fully realised, but it is nevertheless substantial. During the first six months of 1991 steam consumption came down by 45 %, whereas the forecast was for 54 %. This was caused by the occasional unavailability of a sufficient volume of waste vapours from the drying unit. Electricity consumption came down by 31.6 %, whereas 34 % was forecast. The current total annual savings at this plant add up to 112 MWh on electricity and 139.8 TOE on steam. The pay-back period for this project is 4.8 years.
