Abstract

Rough estimates show a market potential for electronic publishing in Europe in the order of magnitude of some 12,000 million ECU in the year 2000 and a high potential for growth until then. However, most publishers are largely unaware of the dramatic changes in the information industry, of new opportunities and threats and the strategic implications of new media. There is significant uncertainty about technologies, markets and economics and very little vision of the future of the information industry. This study was undertaken to provide a strategic framework for electronic publishing for the CEC and European publishers. It involved interviews with more than 250 experts in Europe, USA and Japan. Key players in publishing, electronics, printing and other related businesses were involved, either in individual interviews or workshops. This report represents the summary of the findings, conclusions and recommendations as well as a view of expected developments.
