The evolution of fusion energy is outlined and a general overview provided of radiation protection considerations. The specific design basis for the Next Step tokamak device, as developed by the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) conceptual design activity is described, including its safety approach. Results of the ITER safety analysis are summarised for protection of the public, for both accidental and normal conditions, and for workers. Solid waste forecasts are also provided. Key radiation protection issues are identified, including future safety-related R&D, the role of optimisation, and regulatory practice and policy.
