This book is the result of a workshop on the quantitative assessment of the impact of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) on society. The workshop was organised under the auspices of the CEC within the frame of a concerted action on the mathematical modelling of HIV. These proceedings mainly provide elaborations of methodological studies presented at the workshop. This book is divided into four parts corresponding to the main sessions of the workshop which are: (i) the quality of AIDS/HIV prevalence data used in models; (ii) the scope and applications of models; (iii) linking models with sociological information; (iv) linking models with economic information.
