Abstract

The purpose of the PECOS project was to investigate models for computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), with special reference to cooperation between organisations in large projects. Two practical contexts were analysed, using enterprise modelling techniques in order to identify requirements for CSCW systems. The first was the management of a complex industrial project, the construction of a high-speed train for the Italian railway, which required cooperation between four private companies. The second was the design of an information system for water management in the Lombardy region, which required cooperation among several different branches of public administration. Research conducted in this field is reported and commercial areas where CSCW can be applied are indicated. Methodological issues such as enterprise modelling, system architecture and the incorporation of AI techniques are also examined.
