Abstract

Within an interdisciplinary research comprising remote sensing, mathematical modelling and in situ measurements, a 3-D numerical model has been developed which furnishes the regional hydrodynamics which are crucial for a quantitative assessment of biogeochemical processes in the marine environment. The model is applied to marginal seas with a shallow bathymetry (e.g. Northern Adriatic) as well as to shelf/deep sea areas like the North-West African coastal upwelling zone. The paper provides a basic outline of the model concept, a description of the turbulence modelling approach and a brief discussion of the possible applications of the model.
