Coating of ultrafine ceria-stabilized zirconia
Ultrafine powder of ceria-stabilised zirconia was synthesised and then coated with yttria or alumina using a homogeneous precipitation process. Precipitation was induced by heating an acidic solution of reactants containing urea. The thermal decomposition of urea raised the pH of the solution uniformly, thereby causing homogeneous precipitation. With appropriate process parameters, spherical particles in the size range 400-700 nm were produced. After calcination, the spherical ceria-stabilised zirconia particles were coated with smooth, uniform layers of yttria or alumina using a further homogeneous precipitation step. The yttria layer thickness was about 10 nm, and that of the alumina about 25 nm. The coated particles were characterised by SEM, TEM, HREM and XRD techniques.
